1) hubris. Pride. The invincible Roman Empire.
2) corruption. The roman guardians of the great river defences sold passage for the invading hordes for money and women.
3) insane leaders threw away their best troops making them reliant on mercenaries with close links to their enemies.
4)they became obsessed with games rather than real life
5) they expected a saviour to come an angel with flaming sword if they prayed hard enough
6) they gave up all their gold trying to buy off the invaders before hand.
7) their enemy persistently lied to them about being only there for peace.
8) the citizens of rome refused to defend themselves
9) they stopped expanding and built walls.
10) the lack of credibility of the dream of Rome and pax romans

American Empire is still alive and kicking at the moment.
Poisoning their own food and water with fracking / waste / mineral extraction spillages is just incredibly stupid.
Insane captured leadership is not good.
However the american dream is dying to oligarchy. Empires need the dream to keep people motivated. They need pride in what they are doing is gods work.
Why would people risk their lives to defend the ideal of
wealth and power for the few? answer get robots to do it.
Why would people work their socks off just to make other
people richer? answer get robots to do it.
Freedom and liberty versus the police state.
The brain drain as smart people start emigrating to get away.
Bread and circuses are in full swing.
Games playing is a growing distraction for people to tune out
to the reality.
The control of Energy is going to be absolutely key.
Technology is one hope but also a great risk.
Intelligent people pointing out pitfalls will hopefully help.

One solution is a much stronger democracy and strong leadership that is held to account and that tolerates criticism and satiric ridicule.
